Some very relieved Aden Grove residents in Newington Green, were all shook up yesterday evening, but grateful nobody was hurt after what is thought to be a gas explosion.

Three fire engines, hoards of police cars and ambulances arrived soon after 6.20 pm and evacuated around 50 people from Aden Lodge, a five storey building where the explosion took place in a ground floor flat. The flat that was destroyed is thought to be owned by a man who was not in when it occurred.

Some residents have said they have been told it could be a gas leak and have spoken of smelling gas, They described a loud bang, walls shaking and windows blown out.

“It was so powerful it blew the back door open and the whole house shook,” said BBC journalist Tabby Cole, who lives near to the scene.

“People were running into the street to see what was going on”

Another resident, who lives directly across from Aden Lodge, told Hackney Hive “Lots of houses including ours lost windows. Our cat was terrified, but he’s ok now”.

As of last night not all residents were accounted for, but it’s thought nobody was injured.

The best coverage last night came from a popular local Stoke Newington micro-blogger, who was on the scene almost immediately. He gave blow by blow commentary and analysis via Twitter, reporting on police and emergency services evacuating residents of Aden Lodge wrapped in blue blankets, to Stoke Newington Town Hall for temporary shelter.

But just as explosive as the suspected gas leak, was the presence of ‘Venus’ a ‘lady of the evening’, who had her evening trade nearby interrupted, but saw her on-line popularity soar. At one point it was hard to gauge what the real story was, with reports of Venus flashing her breasts at everyone and getting in the way of reporters, camera people and emergency service. Police even threatened her with arrest at the height of her shenanigans.

London Fire Brigade and Hackney Council, will be carrying out an investigation on the explosion.
